Hymn of the Day: By All Thy Holy Prophets
By All Thy Holy Prophets
King’s Lynn
(We’re Lutheran, so you sing the first verse, then you sing the rest of the verses, then you sing the last verse. None of this proto-Anglican ‘choose the one you feel like’ malarky)

By all Thy holy prophets
Thy judges wise and bold
The mighty men of valor
Thou sent to guard Thy fold
Who Thee in faith professing
Have shown us by Thy grace
That all Thy truth confessing
Shall see Thee face to face
All praise for blessed Moses
By whom Thou gave the law
Who only upon Sinai
The face of God once saw
Who led Thy people Israel
By Thy hand through the sea
That drowned to sins dread slavery
To Thee they might be free
For Abraham all praises
His children as the sand
By faith are counted righteous
From every tribe and land
His own son he’d not withhold
But trusted Thee to give
Thyself for the burnt off’ring
That we by grace might live
All praise o Lord for Noah
Who walked with Thee by faith
Who built the ark in patience
And so was brought through death
Thou set’st thy bow before us
And cleanse us in the flood
That we should trust like Noah
That thou alone art good
For Jonah Lord we praise Thee
Reluctant though he fled
Who in the storm repented
And calmed the waters dread
In three days was he brought forth
Thy judgement to proclaim
That Nineveh repentant
Might by Thee be reclaimed
Oh that my words were written
Proclaimed our father Job
For he knew his Redeemer
With clouds and royal robe
Upon the earth in triumph
In human flesh would stand
And these our eyes behold Him
In that celestial land
All praise for gracious Daniel
Who silent would not pray
But in the sight of gentiles
Held Thee his only stay
Who, sent to roaring lions
Thy child to devour,
Thou raised from death in glory
By Thine almighty power.
Lord let let thy holy fire
descend on us today
Thy Israel to deliver
The priests of Baal to slay
Send us a blest Elijah
Repentance to us bring
That freed from evil masters
We own Thee king of kings
Fill us as blest Elisha
With double portions sure
And with a jar unfailing
With oil enough and more
That we like faithful widows
With heavn’ly mana fed
And with the Son in Shunem
Be raised from the dead
All praise for Shadrach, Meshach,
Adebnago the blest
Before no idol falling
Thee only to attest
Who rather to the furnace
Of earthly wrath would go
Than grant that any other
As Lord that they would know
For all thy men of valor
Benaiah, Shammah true
Josheb-Basshebeth ever
We give thee honor due
Let us like Eleazar
Unflinching stand for thee
Lord grant that all thy soldiers
Be thine eternally
Let us like Jacob wrestle
And let us not relent
Until thou grantest blessing
That by thee we are sent
To raise our tribe in promise
In prayer and praise endued
So Israel limps from meeting
By striving thus renewed
Out from his fathers winepress
Thou Gideon lord didst send
Thy people to deliver
And Satan's reign to end
Yet Gideon would not suffer
As king to wield the sword
For thou alone forever
Alone shall be the Lord
All praise for blest Isaiah
Through whom thou didst foretell
The course of the Messiah
To death and devil fell
Twas by his faithful witness
The Lord didst give a sign
That Christ through Virgin mother
Would come in grace divine
Hosea thy salvation
Who first thy wrath foretold
And faithful to his Gomer
Did suffering to Thee hold
For Thy sake he was humble
To take a harlot bride
As Christ his church so taketh
Forever to abide
Lord thou hast shown through Sampson
Though blind his eyes did see
That thronged by foes and mockers
And pressed by cruelty
Despite our sin and weakness
Still thou shall hear our prayers
By thy right hand deliver
And make us heavens heirs
For all our blessed fathers
Whom thou hast made thine own
Who on the cross in triumph
Thou hanged thee to atone
Lord fire us by their witness
That we unfainting be
In faith to God the Father
The Spirit and to Thee
Get you some Zechariah in there; the proto-martyr and preacher of repentance to a truly unregenerate generation, all of which is richly Christological.
ReplyDeleteJoseph, who gave us one of the greatest consoling sentences, pointing to God's providence.
I would want to see Jacob's new name be brought out in his verse.
Could also do one for Samuel, or Nathan, speaking truth to the kings, even when the kings were evil.
Ezra and Nehemiah, who were bold to witness even in Babylon to return their people to the right worship of the true God.
Lots of great saints in the old testament. Lots of apostasy to witness against.
So let it be written. So let it be done.
